In this blog post, I share the take home messages behind the Doodle Dozen stories.
The Doodle Dozen are twelve pencil pals who love doodling and getting creative with their best friend Ziggy.
They are a unique bunch, not your typical pack of pencils!
Within the group, there is one HB ‘writing’ pencil, called Lead Pencil, and eleven coloured pencils, each with their own personalities.
They understand and accept their individual differences, and celebrate these individual characteristics, strengths and weaknesses.
However, one thing they know for sure is that they are stronger together as the Doodle Dozen, because together, they always achieve greater things!
I believe this is especially important in today’s world for children to understand the importance of community and togetherness, celebrating diversity, rather than division and discrimination.
As human beings, we are all different with our individual qualities, and should always remain true to ourselves but we can still work together for the greater good of humanity.
More importantly, recognition of the value of community makes us more willing to show kindness to each other and support each other when needed.
In my own experience, I have found that encouraging our sons to explore their creativity and imagination through drawing and colouring has helped them to build confidence, develop their skills and talents, understand and express their emotions, amongst a plethora of other benefits.
These themes run throughout the series and my hope is that it will inspire other young minds to understand and appreciate the diversity of the world around us as well as the true value of friendship, and creativity.
Shouldn't we continue to empower our children to be able to explore their own creativity whilst also being kind and respectful to those around them?
What a wonderful world it would be if we all did just that!
What inspires you? How do you explore your creative side?
